EABCO's Nine-Mile Whale Watching Field TestWe took Pentax DCF NV 8x36 and LV 9x28 binoculars to the island of Maui for a field test of whale watching at distances up to nine miles and beyond. From our vantage point, the island of Lanai was 9 miles away at its closest point. It was a tough test for ANY optics but these Pentax binoculars easily distinguished spouts, tails, and breeches along that faraway shoreline of Lanai. It was actually shocking how much we could see with such detail and clarity. White undersides and black backs... Gnarly fins, etc. Some days were hazy and some were clear. These light weight Pentax binoculars were comfortable to hold, gave zero eye strain and a huge field of view... Even for those of us wearing eyeglasses.So What's the Big Secret? At such a moderate price, these binoculars have all of the best features and advancements of far more expensive binoculars. In many ways they actually surpass the more expensive binoculars... binoculars are about 50% brighter than 10x binoculars. 8x has a significantly
wider field of view, too. In contrast, 10x is really only 1.25X greater
magnification than 8x. That 1.25x difference in using 10x magnification is not
very significant when you compare it to the better brightness and field of view
of the 8x magnifi- cation. We recommend 8x binoculars for hunting, birding, whale watching, sports, theater, everything... More... |
