Why You Need A Cheek Rest When Using a Riflescope Riflescope Cheek Rests align your eye with the center of your riflescope for stress free aiming and more accurate shooting. But There's More to the Story... Mass production riflestocks have cheek rests that are usually too low for riflescope use. This is because they're intended to function with BOTH riflescope and the much lower iron sights. You can make one of these stocks work with a scope, and it will seem fine because you just get such a nice sight picture out of a scope compared to iron sights. BUT, you may not realize that (because the cheekrest is too low) you are contorting and stressing the way you are holding the rifle. This promotes an inconsistent hold that may be different everytime you aim your rifle or every time you change shooting positions. The Parallax Factor - Parallax error is an optical aiming error in which the crosshairs move when the position of your eye changes. Shooting a rifle with a too-low cheekrest will cause you to have an inconsistent eye position. So in addition to an inconsistent hold, a cheek rest that is too low will also give you the most parallax aiming error due to the changing position of your eye! Cheek Rests Make Scopes Shoot Better - A cheek rest that properly and consistently aligns your eye with your riflescope will promote a consistent hold while it minimizes the parallax error caused by changing eye positions.
